The Fighting Ground Creek quartz roasting pits complex near Hill End was established in 1855 to support reef mining on the Tambaroora goldfield. It is one of the oldest remaining intact gold rush sites and represents one of the first attempts to process reef gold in Australia using kilns for roasting gold-bearing quartz. The pits were built for the Colonial Gold Company by expert Cornish immigrant miners.
